Tinubu Hails Team Nigeria’s Historic 15th African Wrestling Title

ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria following a dominant outing at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships, where the country clinched a record 15th continental title in the women’s category.Describing the achievement as a reflection of consistency, discipline, and national pride, the President said Nigeria’s wrestlers have once again proven their dominance on the African stage.Team Nigeria secured 8 gold and 2 silver medals out of 10 events in the women’s division. Overall, the team finished with an impressive tally of 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals across all categories—an outcome Tinubu said highlights both elite performance and depth within the squad.The President praised standout athletes including Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Mercy Adekuoroye for their composed and skillful performances. He also commended Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo for his confident victory in the men’s freestyle category.Tinubu further acknowledged the efforts of Ebierelayefa Andrew, Stephen Akintewe, Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo, and Saviour Egoli, emphasizing that such victories are built on collective effort as much as individual brilliance.He noted that the success reflects a broader transformation within Nigeria’s sports system, driven by improved structure, preparation, and long-term athlete development.The President also highlighted the work of the National Sports Commission under the leadership of Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade, stating that their approach is beginning to yield tangible results.“This is how a sporting nation grows—not by accident or chance, but by design. By building systems that identify talent early, nurture it patiently, and prepare it deliberately for moments like this,” Tinubu said.
