US evacuation signals fading confidence in Nigeria — Peter Obi‎

‎Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised serious concerns over Nigeria’s security situation following reports that the United States has begun evacuating some of its embassy staff from the country. According to him, this development reflects a growing lack of confidence by the international community in Nigeria’s ability to guarantee safety and stability.‎Speaking from Abuja, Obi described the move as alarming, noting that it sends a negative signal not only about the country’s security framework but also about its leadership and governance. He emphasized that such actions by a global power like the United States place Nigeria under intense international scrutiny and could have far-reaching consequences.‎Obi warned that beyond the immediate security implications, the evacuation could significantly damage investor confidence, strain diplomatic relations, and further weaken an already fragile economy. He stressed that for a country actively seeking foreign investment and economic partnerships, such perceptions could be deeply harmful.‎In a statement released on Friday, he urged the Nigerian government to treat the issue as a matter of national urgency. He pointed out that Nigeria’s current ranking as fourth on the Global Terrorism Index underscores the severity of the crisis, adding that the situation continues to worsen with persistent attacks, loss of lives, and communities living in fear.‎“This is not just a security concern; it is a national emergency,” Obi stated. “When a country struggles to protect its citizens and maintain order, it risks losing credibility on the global stage.”‎He further criticized what he described as a lack of effective governance, arguing that political interests appear to be taking priority over the safety and welfare of Nigerians. According to him, there is an urgent need for decisive leadership, strategic security reforms, and a renewed commitment to protecting lives and restoring confidence both locally and internationally.‎Obi concluded by calling on authorities to act swiftly and responsibly, warning that failure to address the situation could deepen Nigeria’s challenges and further erode trust in its institutions.
